Karen Veverka Headshot

Karen currently teaches 6-12 Orchestra in Skaneateles, NY, at Skaneateles Central Schools. Her previous teaching positions have included serving as adjunct faculty at Syracuse University, teaching String Methods as well as applied violin and viola. She graduated from Syracuse University with a Masters Degree in Violin Performance, K-12 Music Ed. certification and has completed additional studies at Aspen, Berklee School of Music in Boston, and Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute. She works with our New York rep Marlene Hawkins and it is through Marlene that she became familiar with Baroque Violin Shop.

Tell us about your school’s orchestra program?

Our orchestra program at Skaneateles begins in 4th grade, and develops into 6th grade, 7-8th grade, and 9-12 HS ensembles. The Skaneateles HS Orchestra has performed in national competitions in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, CA., as well as having received “Gold” and “Gold With Distinction” awards at annual NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) festivals.

What instruments do you play/teach?

I play violin, my main instrument, as well as viola, cello and bass, and teach each of these instruments.  I play violin and viola professionally.

How did your career in music get started?

My music career began once I graduated from college and realized how much I was going to miss orchestra!  After earning both a BA and MA in English, I switched careers and earned a Masters Degree in Music from Syracuse University. As a fellowship student, I was also given the opportunity to perform with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. I also developed a keen interest in conducting, and conducted a youth orchestra for our local symphony, Symphoria, for seven years.  I have also conducted for American Music Abroad, local summer theater pit orchestras, and HS drama pit orchestras.

What’s your favorite song to play?

That’s a difficult question to answer, because there are so many! If I am performing in a symphony orchestra, I would have to say that I am partial to Mahler and Bruckner symphonies. I also love improvisation, and our HS Orchestra has hosted rock violinist Mark Wood three times.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I enjoy exercising, working out at the gym, reading and keeping up on current events, and playing with my dog, Jackson.

What has been your favorite moment as a teacher?

My favorite moment as a teacher was standing on the mall in Washington, D.C. for Obama’s Inauguration in 2009, after my HS Orchestra had just won first place at an inaugural music festival sponsored by Heritage Festivals.

What do you find to be the best motivator for students?

I find the best motivation for students is a teacher who is passionate about their subject.

What are your future goals as a musician and teacher?

My future goals as a musician include private studio teaching and expanding my performing opportunities.

Any exciting plans for the holiday season or new year?

I am planning to retire from public school teaching in June of 2022. I will be savoring each last concert, while I plan new teaching and performing experiences.
